Four strange UFO encounters—and the questions they leave behind

What if the most important part of an encounter was the part we did not know how to describe?

Welcome to Unknown Origin Field Notes. I’m Bill Van Nort. This is a place for the details that stay with us after an episode ends: the source trail, the uncertainty, and the questions that get bigger the longer we sit with them.

Our first episode follows four reported experiences in Italy, New Zealand, Australia, and Finland. None establishes extraterrestrial contact. Each challenges the assumption that contact would be obvious or easy to understand.

Rosa Lotti — Cennina, Italy, 1954

Flowers and a stocking. Those are the objects at the center of Lotti’s account of two small figures beside an unfamiliar object. What looks meaningful to one participant may be unreadable to another.

The source trail combines contemporary press coverage with later investigation. Versions differ. Sergio Conti’s investigation appeared in Flying Saucer Review, volume 18, number 5 (1972), pages 11–15. CUFOS’s HUMCAT entry 54-101: https://cufos.org/PDFs/HUMCAT/HUMCAT_Index_1954.pdf is a cross-reference, not independent corroboration.

Eileen Moreland — New Zealand, 1959

A woman bringing in her cows reported green light, an oval object, and two figures. The aftermath takes us into official paperwork and the vulnerability of becoming the subject of an extraordinary story.

An official file establishes that a report was received and handled; it does not establish an alien origin. The source trail includes RNZAF file AIR 244/10/1, volume 1, and this later reporting: https://interactives.stuff.co.nz/2018/03/finding-mrs-moreland/.

Maureen Puddy — Victoria, Australia

Puddy reported a blue light accompanying her car. Later, with investigators present, she described an experience they could not see. They could observe her reactions; they did not corroborate her physical removal from the car.

Dates and chronology vary between sources. Keith Basterfield’s comparison of official forms and later accounts begins here: https://ufos-scientificresearch.blogspot.com/2012/10/cold-case-investigation-frankston-vic.html.

The Imjärvi skiers — Finland, 1970

Two skiers reported an unusual event and subsequent physical symptoms. The changing descriptions are part of the story. Reported symptoms do not establish radiation exposure or an extraterrestrial cause.

The research trail includes Sven-Olof Fredrickson in Flying Saucer Review, volume 16, number 4 (1970), and Anders Liljegren’s critical reconstruction in volume 26, number 3 (1980), pages 15–17. The episode did not independently inspect Finnish clinical records.

One question to carry

Would we recognize an attempt to communicate? Could something be meaningful to them and completely invisible to us?

The episode’s later reflections about confirmed contact, God, and higher intelligence are thought experiments, not predictions or claims of a confirmed hidden history. Its visual reconstructions are illustrative, not archival footage.

If one detail stayed with you, leave a comment under the video—or reply to this email. I’d like to know what it made you question.

Dramatized Pascagoula scene from Unknown Origin Episode 005; illustrative synthetic cast, not a historical photograph.

The encounter ends. The rest of a life begins. That is the question at the heart of Episode 005: After the Encounter. When the questions stop and the cameras leave, there is still a working day, a family, and a life to return to. This episode follows Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker after their reported Pascagoula encounter, then turns to Betty and Barney Hill. It asks what public attention, memory, and the passage of time can do to a story—and to the people carrying it. Watch the full film...

Illustration of a light beneath a dark sea, a distant vessel, and the words What Went Under?

Hey everyone, One light was still on the water. By the time the boat could reach it, it was gone. That detail in the early Shag Harbour paperwork stayed with me. A disappearing light in the sky leaves you looking up. A disappearing light in the ocean leaves you standing over the place where it might still be. Something Under the Water, Episode 003 of Unknown Origin, is now ready to explore. Watch the full episode: Watch Something Under the Water Listen or read the transcript: Listen and read...

ONLY ONCE? Conceptual space and signal artwork for Unknown Origin Episode 004; not original Wow! signal data.

Hello, Six characters on a computer printout: 6EQUJ5. They look like something waiting to be decoded. But they record the measured strength of a signal—not an extraterrestrial sentence. That difference is where the new Unknown Origin episode begins. Episode 004, What If We Only Hear Them Once?, is now available in 4K. We follow the Wow! signal from the work of listening into a stranger problem: what happens after receiving something we cannot explain? Watch the full episode on YouTube → Watch...
