The Wow! Signal: What If We Only Hear Them Once? | Field Notes

Hello,

Six characters on a computer printout: 6EQUJ5.

They look like something waiting to be decoded. But they record the measured strength of a signal—not an extraterrestrial sentence. That difference is where the new Unknown Origin episode begins.

Episode 004, What If We Only Hear Them Once?, is now available in 4K. We follow the Wow! signal from the work of listening into a stranger problem: what happens after receiving something we cannot explain?

Three things to listen for

The printout. The famous sequence belongs to an observation with limits. An unexplained signal does not establish who—or what—produced it.

The message from Mars. A Sign in Space used a real spacecraft to transmit a human-designed message. Knowing that someone made a message does not make its meaning obvious.

The reply. Imagine a conversation whose next turn arrives after everyone who began it has died. That is a thought experiment in the episode, not a claim that contact has been confirmed.

Your field question

You can introduce Earth with one image and one sound. No explanatory caption in a language you know the recipient understands. What do you send? And what could they get wrong?

Reply to this email or join the conversation under the YouTube episode. I would love to hear your reasoning.

A note on the numbering: Episode 004 is intentionally arriving ahead of Episode 003, which is still in production. I am keeping the numbers intact.

The film combines credited archival material, scientific visualizations and identified illustrative scenes. Narration uses my authorized synthetic voice. Sources, uncertainty and imagination each have their place.

Dramatized Pascagoula scene from Unknown Origin Episode 005; illustrative synthetic cast, not a historical photograph.

The encounter ends. The rest of a life begins. That is the question at the heart of Episode 005: After the Encounter. When the questions stop and the cameras leave, there is still a working day, a family, and a life to return to. This episode follows Charles Hickson and Calvin Parker after their reported Pascagoula encounter, then turns to Betty and Barney Hill. It asks what public attention, memory, and the passage of time can do to a story—and to the people carrying it. Watch the full film...

Illustration of a light beneath a dark sea, a distant vessel, and the words What Went Under?

Hey everyone, One light was still on the water. By the time the boat could reach it, it was gone. That detail in the early Shag Harbour paperwork stayed with me. A disappearing light in the sky leaves you looking up. A disappearing light in the ocean leaves you standing over the place where it might still be. Something Under the Water, Episode 003 of Unknown Origin, is now ready to explore. Watch the full episode: Watch Something Under the Water Listen or read the transcript: Listen and read...

Illustrated UFO and three figures beside a truck at night; What Do They Want? Unknown Origin Episode 2.

A man leaves the path and pushes into thorny palms. Whatever is behind him, the shelter he chooses tells you something about how badly he wants to disappear. That is where Episode 2 begins. With a person trying to hide. What Do They Want From Us? follows reported encounters in Argentina and Brazil, then enters Whitley Strieber’s accounts and a much darker question: when people call humans “soul containers,” what are they actually claiming—and where did that claim come from? I wanted this...
